New NADF group at Newton Aycliffe

Rev. Debbie Loughran has set up a new group at St Elizabeth's church in Newton Aycliffe. It's the Newton Aycliffe Deaf Fellowship group (NADF). They held their first meeting just before Christmas, and will meet up every 2 weeks, starting on January 10th, then 24th and so on. It starts at 5.30 and finishes at 8.00 p.m. A group of people from St Andrew's at Newcastle went down by minibus in December, and had a great time. Some people knew each other from school! Everyone at St Elizabeth's made us feel very welcome, and we're looking forward to going back soon.

Double celebration

On 18th September Bishop Frank White confirmed a group of people at St Andrew's church. Julia Lister and Tom Lafferty were confirmed, and lots of their deaf friends were there to support them. At the end of the service Bishop Frank gave Glyn Evans his Licence to be chaplain for deaf people. We had refreshments in the hall and took photos of Bishop Frank with the deaf group. Sadly he retired that afternoon, but we gave him a card that everyone had signed, and we wishes him all the best for the future. Viv signed the service for everyone.

Visit to Hexham & St John Lee

14 people went by coach to Hexham on Saturday 1st October. We looked around the town then had a lovely lunch at Wetherspoons. The coach driver then took us to the church of St John Lee, not far away. The people of St John Lee had invited us to visit for a service followed by afternoon tea. Rev Jane Penn talked about us all belonging to the Christian family. We wrote names of people that we wanted to pray for, stuck them on bricks, and made a wall, like the ones for keeping flocks of sheep safe. Glyn did some of the readings, and Viv signed everything - including lots of hymns. Roy signed the Lord's prayer. We had a delicious tea, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We hope to see them all again!

Our day with Rev Bob Shrine

Rev Bob Shrine, a deaf priest who was chaplain for deaf people in Yorkshire, came to spend a day with us in September. In the morning, while the coffee morning was busy downstairs, he talked to Rev Glyn Evans, Rev Debbie Loughran and some others about signing church services. Everyone came upstairs for lunch together, and in the afternoon Bob taught us how to sign some of the prayers that we use in the services. We had a great day with him, and learned such a lot!

Tuesday 17th November 2015

Florrie Taylor

We are all very sad that Florrie Taylor died just before her 75th birthday. She has been a very regular attender at the services at St Andrew's church for many years, and had many friends, deaf and hearing, all over the north east. We will miss her, but will remember her with love.

Tuesday 17th November 2015

Welcome back service for Linda

On Sunday 15th November the Newcastle and Stockton people came together for a welcome back service for Rev Linda Shipp. Linda had been off work for 18 months, and it was lovely to have her back again. There were about 22 people there, taking part in the responses, the prayers and the hymn at the end. We prayed for everyone in Paris who was hurt or who died, or who lost someone in the terrible attacks on Friday. St Francis Church is very new and has some beautiful windows. The white wall behind the altar made it easy to see the words of the prayers that were projected from the computer. After the service we had a very nice tea, with delicious home made sandwiches and cakes. The sad thing was that Florrie Taylor was going to come with us, but she dies 2 weeks before. We remembered her in our prayers.

Meeting Bishop Paul at Sunderland Minster

Tuesday 8th July 2014

A visit from an old friend.

On Thursday 19th June, we had a visit from Raymond Wake, who moved to the south coast a few years ago, but he likes to come back to visit his friends in the north east every year. Raymond was looking well, and said that he still feels happy living in the south. Maybe it's warmer there than in Newcastle????

Tuesday 8th July 2014

Stockton service had to be postponed

Everyone had been looking forward to meeting Bishop Paul at the service at Stockton on July 6th. Sadly, we heard that Pat Manton was very ill, and had to be in hospital for a while. She's now back at home, but it may be a while before she starts to feel better. Simeon thought that it would be better to have the service with Bishop Paul later in the year, when we hope that Pat and her husband will be able to come.

Wednesday 7th May 2014

After Easter service

On Sunday 4th May we had a lovely service at St Andrew's, with the people from Stockton church who came up by minibus to join us. Simeon Bishop taught everyone to sign Hallelujah! as we signed a couple of hymns. John Clasper read the Gospel about Mary Magdalene going to the tomb, and finding that Jesus was not there any more. Simeon explained what had happened before that, and why the Disciples were so upset and sad. Then we were told about Jesus rising from the dead, and that is why we sang/signed Hallelujah! to show that everyone was full of joy and happiness. I (Lynne) told the story of WIlliam Wailes, the man who designed stained glass windows. He and his wife Janet had some deaf children - some of them died as young children, and there is a window in St Andrew's church showing a priest finger spelling to them. David Gray reminded us about all the people in the world who are in fear, have no food, no friends to help them. Then we all lit a candle to remember our friends and family, and others who need our thoughts and help. After the service we had a wonderful tea in the hall. Alma and her family had worked very hard to prepare it for us, and we're very grateful to them all.

The new Bishop of Durham wants to meet deaf people

On Saturday 22nd February, the new Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Paul Butler was installed at Durham Cathedral. There were hundreds of people there, from Durham and from far away - with lots of music, singing and colour. We wish him much success and happiness in his new work. Exciting news for the deaf people at Stockton - Bishop Paul will be going to their service on Sunday 6th July. This will be a great chance for Bishop Paul to take part in a signed service, and to meet deaf people and find out what they think about their church. If anyone from the Tyneside or Northumberland area would like to go to Stockton for this event, please contact Alma Bell as soon as possible. We hope to be able to arrange transport.

Thomas Lafferty - a proud medal holder

Thomas Lafferty has been coming to the coffee mornings for a while now, supported by Guy or Peter who can use deafblind manual communication with amazing speed. A few weeks ago Thomas brought in a medal in its presentation case, and I asked whether I could take a photo of him with the medal. He agreed that would be fine. Today I asked him to explain how he got his medal. It's a British Empire medal, and was awarded to him in 1983, as an outstanding employee at Remploy, where Thomas worked for many years, making beds. The first factory was closed, and moved to a larger one, and the new manager was very impressed with Thomas's hard work and high production rate. The local newspapers got to hear of him and he featured in an article in the Evening Chronicle. It's so good to hear of someone's efforts being recognised and rewarded, and Thomas is an example of someone who gave his full attention to his work, and enjoyed it. I'm so pleased that he brought his medal to show us, and that he agreed to allow me to write about him for our web site. Lynne

New member of the NDM team

Welcome to Val, who has joined the NDM team, as a pastoral assistant. We hope that she will enjoy her work with us, and bring some new ideas. Val came to the coffee morning last week, and is getting to know everyone there. She also came to the Sunday service, where she met more people, and joined them for a cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards.

Special visitor in October

We are looking forward to meeting Gill Behenna, Chaplain with the Deaf community in Bristol on Thursday 31st October. She's coming to visit everyone at the NDM for a day, to meet us and talk to us about the work of the Deaf church in other parts of England. In the summer she was appointed as National Adviser on the Church of England's ministry with Deaf people. She was a chaplain with the Deaf community in Exeter before moving to Bristol. I'm sure she will have a lot to tell us.

Thursday 19th September 2013

coffee mornings back to normal

We have had a good crowd of people at the coffee mornings, since there was a 2 week break. Rain doesn't stop people coming, and there's always a lot of chat and laughing! There's nowhere better for meeting up with friends, or making new friends, and having a drink and something to eat, if you're hungry.

Thursday 29th August 2013

Coffee mornings

Our weekly coffee morning is going strong, with new and old friends turning up every week. It's a perfect chance to meet up with people, have a chat, and there's always a lot of laughter! Alma and Tracey provide a good range of hot and cold drinks and very tempting snacks, all at very reasonable prices. It's on Thursdays from 10 - 12ish - some people come early, and some stay late! It will be open again after a short break from 12th September, so we hope to see you there!
